How Fermented Milk Products Containing Probiotics May Cure Constipation.

The Physical Effects of Depression

Depression is a type of mood disorder that makes you feel sad and not want to do anything. Depression can be caused by stress, unhealthy eating habits, or not getting enough exercise. People with depression often have stomach problems like diarrhea and constipation. Depression can also make you feel sicker than usual.

Can Probiotics Help Improve Constipation?

A type of probiotic called Lactobacillus paracasei strain Shirota (LcS), formerly Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota, has been around for a long time and is safe to eat. LcS is a type of probiotic that has been shown to improve constipation. It does this by increasing the number of good bacteria in your gut, which helps you digest food better and have more regular bowel movements.

In this study, researchers wanted to see if LcS could also help people with depression who suffer from constant constipation.

The Study on the Probiotic Lactobacillus Paracasei to Help in Depression and Constipation

In this study, people with depression and constipation were tested. According to the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria, they had to be 18-60 years old, have a body mass index of 18.5-29.9, and have been diagnosed with depression by a psychiatrist. They also had to have a Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17 items score of ≥8, which is considered as depression.

The exclusion criteria for this study was that they couldn’t use systemic antibiotics or antimycotics in the 30 days before the study, use the antidiarrheal or laxative medication in the 30 days before the study, investigator uncertainty about their willingness or ability to comply with protocol requirements, persons with milk protein allergy, lactose intolerance or constipation issues of organic or neurological origin; pregnant women; those who used antidepressants within two weeks prior before entering into this study; and those who are in any other studies within two months before entering into this study.

Researchers collected demographic data, eligibility criteria, medical history, and concomitant medications at the screening visit. Participants were evenly randomized into the LcS or placebo group stratified by medication status.

The Results on Probiotics Effect on Constipation

In this study, we found that LcS helped people with constipation. We also found that LcS helped people with depression.

The study had some limitations, and the beneficial effects of LcS on depression were not clearly demonstrated, but reductions in the Beck Depression Index (BDI) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores were observed in the LcS group compared to the placebo group.

Conclusion

The study found that taking LcS for nine weeks improved people’s constipation and depressive symptoms. They also found that the LcS helped regulate the bacteria in the gut, which could be related to mental illness.
